History

A brief account

The vivid red, orange or yellow tops are mutants lacking chlorophyll — they cannot survive alone and are grafted onto a green rootstock, usually Hylocereus. The cultivar was perfected in Japan in 1941 and has been a windowsill favourite ever since.

How to care for

Moon Cactus (Gymnocalycium mihanovichii) grows best when its natural cycle of strong light, freely draining soil and measured watering is respected. Give it bright indirect light. direct sun fades and scorches the coloured top. Water it according to its seasonal needs: lightly every two weeks in summer; almost none in winter. Plant it in standard fast-draining cactus mix. A container with an unobstructed drainage hole is essential, because moisture lingering around cactus roots can quickly lead to rot. Keep its temperature needs in mind: 10–28°c. not frost-hardy. During active growth, check the compost before watering rather than following a rigid calendar, since heat, light and pot size all change how quickly it dries. Reduce watering during cool or dormant periods, keep the plant well ventilated, and wait until the growing medium is dry before watering again.

How to propagate

The graft must be re-made on a fresh rootstock when the original tires. Grafting is best attempted during active growth with clean, sharp tools and a healthy, compatible rootstock. Keep the joined surfaces firmly aligned and dry until they have fused, then return the plant gradually to its normal light and watering routine. Young cacti are especially vulnerable to excess moisture. Use a small pot with excellent drainage, provide bright filtered light while roots establish, and move the new plant gradually into the light, temperature and watering conditions preferred by a mature Moon Cactus.
